Tips for Glazing a Window
To seal your windows properly so that there is no unwanted water and air, glazing ought to be replaced after a certain period. Although glazing takes some time and skill, you can still glaze your windows by yourself; use the below guidelines.
Make sure you get all you need. You have to ensure every item that will be necessary when a window is being glazed is acquired. The things that will help you glaze a window correctly include putty, a putty knife, clean rags, sandpaper, paintbrushes, paint, adhesive tape, and more. There are high chances that most of the items are in your garage or house but if they are not, you can buy them from nearby hardware.
Ensure the glass and old putty are removed. Ensure a newspaper is taped on each side of the pane. Secondly, using a hammer, damage the glass and remove it from the pane. The next thing is to get the putty loose using the putty knife. If the putty does not easily come out when one is using a knife; they should consider melting it using the blow torch. Disconnect the metal fasteners from the frames.
Smooth the wood. Ensure you make the wood smooth with the help of the sandpaper. After smoothening it sufficiently, treat the wood using the oil-based primer then seal it off. It is important o apply primer because it hinders oil absorption that can result in cracks on the glazing after a short time, meaning more drafts. The primer ought to be left for 24 hours so that it dries.
Ensure you knead the putty. After you have kneaded the putty until soft, use your fingers to put it along the inner side of the window panes. Using the putty knife, ensure it is fixed as tight as possible. After the putty is placed fit the new glass pane.
Apply new glazing. Place glazier points at the center of the window pane and press the point into place using the putty knife. Ensure each side of the window pane has glazier points then put another glazing on the window frame. Apply pressure to ensure the glazing has held the glass pane securely. You should remove the extra putty.
You should let the glazing dry and paint it. Ensure you leave the glazing for a period of ten days for drying purpose. You could get irritated seeing fingerprints all over the glass but never clean it until it dries up. You should clean up the window using the oil-based primer as well as the paint while making sure it aligns with your houses other windows.
